In the temperate grasslands, precipitation is not very high. Since there isn't much rainfall, there are very few trees in the temperate grassland. The main vegetation is grass. Fires are often a problem since it is so dry. The average precipitation is 20 to 35 inches a year. Most of the rainfall comes in the late spring or early summer.

Temperate grasslands have soils that are nutrient-rich from the growth and decay of deep, many-branched grass roots. The rotted roots hold the soil together and provide a food source for living plants. The world's most fertile soils underlie the eastern prairies of the United States. The level of biodiversity is medium. There isn't a huge variety of life in the grasslands but its not low either.
Some biotic factors in the temperate grasslands include:
Zebras
Lions
Prairie dogs
Ostrich
Buffalo
Hyenas
Wolves
Coyotes
Antelope
Rhinoceros
Wildflowers
Shrubs
Little trees
Wheat
Corn and
Long tail grass

Buffalo grass is a type of grass which grows mainly in the North American prairies. The climate of the North American prairie is dry during the summer and cold and windy in the winter. Buffalo grass grows to be 2 to 5 inches tall. The grass turns brown in the winter and lavender in the autumn. The main characteristic of buffalo grass is its hardiness; it is drought resistant and goes dormant in the dry season. It is also cold- and heat-resistant. Buffalo grass is a source of food for buffalo, jackrabbits, prairie dogs, white-tailed deer and other grassland animals. Another characteristic of the buffalo grass is that it is fire-resistant. This is a great adaptation due to the fact that it is so dry and fires happen fairly often.

The cheetah has adapted very well to its habitat. It has a fairly small body and long legs that allow it to reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour. The spots on its back help them blend into the tall grass and to hide from its prey. Also, the cheetah's long tail is used to help balance the cheetah while its running.
Cheetahs are considered secondary consumers. Cheetahs do not really interact with other animals. If they are around other animals, it usually because they are hunting them. |
